3 gallons should work. I believe the commercial upside down planters are no bigger than that. Try it. Then after the season look at the tomato's root ball and let us know if it filled up the 3 gallon space. If there is still room, we know that that's enough space. If you plant wants to push roots out of the top, we know we should recommended bigger.
